Hebron Mayor Khaled Osaily met at his office today with U.S. Consul General Daniel Rubinstein as well as with Mr. Rick Waters, chief of the political section at the US Consulate in Jerusalem and their accompanying delegation. The meeting discussed conditions in Hebron and delegation members got acquainted with living, security and economic conditions in the city as well as with services provided to its inhabitants.
After his words of welcome, Osaily spoke about Israeli occupation violations, conditions in the Old City, the impact of closures and checkpoints on the daily life of Palestinians, and the key role the US can play to pressure Israel to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. “Palestinians in Hebron aspire to live a normal life like all other peoples in the world. They want a decent life and to live in freedom, security and stability, conditions which lack in Hebron due to occupation and settler practices. Hebron visitors are moved by the suffering of Old City inhabitants in the city’s markets and quarters. The free world must move urgently to implement Human Rights Treaties and International Pacts which call for the respect of civilians and their rights to live in freedom, dignity, security and stability. All influential powers, namely the US Administration, must exert pressure on Israel to oblige it to respect international resolutions, abide by the peace process and put an end to settlements and to decisions which stall peace”, he added.
Osaily underlined the importance of ensuring a normal life for Palestinians and of supporting vital projects in the OPTs. He spoke about the great achievements realized in recent years and about Palestinians’ will to build their State and Governorates despite obstacles created by Israeli occupation policies.
Osaily then accompanied the delegation on a tour to the Municipality’s various Departments, providing his guests with a briefing on its main technical and managerial achievements. The tour comprised the following municipal sections: GIS, Electricity, Project Management, General Administration, Accounting, Customer Services and the Remote Control Unit.
Consul General Rubinstein expressed his pleasure at this visit and at his meeting with Hebron Mayor. He also expressed his satisfaction with the achievements realized by the Municipality, the improvements in the quality of services provided to Palestinians as well as with projects recently implemented. He underlined the political importance of improving the economic and educational conditions as well as services provided to Palestinians
