Hebron Mayor Khaled Osaily met on the 11th of April at his office with Britain’s Vice-Consul in Jerusalem, Mr. Benjamin Saul. During this meeting, Mr. Saul was briefed on the situation in Hebron as well as on economic and living conditions in the city under the continuous Israeli occupation of its southern part and settler presence in the heart of the Old City.
“What is happening in Hebron transgresses international laws and treaties as well as agreements signed between the PNA and Israel under international auspices. The Quartet and the EU must intervene to end the expansion of settlements and to lift restrictions and occupation measures imposed on Palestinians in the city”, he said.
Osaily also touched on economic conditions in Hebron and means to boost the city’s economy and trade to ensure the comprehensive development of all sectors, thus improving living conditions and enabling Hebron Municipality to enhance the quality of its services. He also spoke about obstacles faced by the Municipality due to occupation measures, mainly difficulties in preparing comprehensive and integrated city plans as well as comprehensive structural plans that would help develop the city. Osaily touched on the key projects implemented by the Municipality last year and projects that are under way. “We aim to give more opportunities to young people in order to develop their capacities and polish their skills and talents by focusing on projects targeting youths and those that would create job opportunities for recent graduates”, he added.
Mr. Saul commended Hebron Municipality for its work as well as for its capacity to implement vital projects and to harness technology to better manage Hebron Municipality. He hoped to see an increase in cooperation between the Municipality and the British Consulate.
