Switzerland’s State Secretary for Foreign Affairs visits Hebron and meets with Mayor Osaily

Peter Maurer, Switzerland’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs, visited Hebron on 5/10/2010 in order to get better acquainted with conditions in Hebron and its Old City as well as to assess its general humanitarian and political situation. Mr. Maurer was accompanied by Mr. Yakhar Nifsi Izara, Vice-coordinator for the Middle East at the Swiss Foreign Ministry’s Political Section, Switzerland’s Representative to the PNA Mr.  Rolland Ishtenker, Switzerland vice-Representative to the PNA as well as the Head of the Swiss Agency for International Cooperation.

Osaily received his guests at Hebron Municipality. He valued this visit and underlined the role the EU can play to protect Palestinian rights, ensure world peace and defend oppressed peoples.

Osaily made a detailed presentation on life in Hebron, measures imposed by occupation authorities as well as the impact of the many Israeli checkpoints and road blocks in and around the Old City. He touched on projects implemented by the Municipality, especially those targeting the youths and sports sectors, which are given top priority by Hebron Municipality. He also spoke about his vision on how development can enhance economic conditions and create jobs for the unemployed and for recent graduates.

Osaily also touched on obstacles put by Israel to hinder the execution of vital and infrastructure projects in the city. He called on his guest to exert pressure on the Israeli government to facilitate and improve daily life especially in the Old City. Moreover, Mayor Osaily spoke about the project to inscribe Hebron on Unesco’s World Heritage List. He presented progress made, partners involved and the aim behind Hebron’s inscription which is to protect the city and its various historic sites from any alteration caused by Israeli measures and settlement policies in the OPT.

Mr. Maurer said that he follows the situation in Hebron very closely. “I am aware of conditions and incidents taking place in Hebron, and I am very happy to be in this city and holy site”, he said.

During a tour in the Old City in the company of Mayor Osaily which included the holy Al Ibrahimi Mosque and settler outposts, Mr. Maurer added that he hoped that Hebron’s children will enjoy a normal life in the future like all their peers. Before leaving the city,he invited Mayor Osaily to visit Geneva and called for mutual visits between Swiss and Palestinian businessmen.
