Mayor Osaily: The central public shared taxi station project is underway and many projects shall be finalized in the near future

At a press conference held in Hebron, Mayor Khaled Osaily stated today that the project aimed at building a central public shared taxi station is officially underway. The press conference was held at the end of a tour in Hebron Governorate during which mayor Osaily accompanied representatives from local and foreign media to the sites of recently launched as well as almost-ready projects implemented by the Municipality.

Mayor Osaily said that Hebron in general and the city center in particular suffer from intense traffic causing traffic jams in this vital and rapidly growing area. It thus became urgent to organize and regulate traffic in the area which is the centre of the Palestinian city with the most intense commercial and social activities. The aim behind the station is to serve the city and enable its development and growth based on a comprehensive vision which would set the ground for long-term development plans.
Mayor Osaily said that the project was delayed for five months because of the lack of funding to cover its cost (6.6 million USD). Hebron municipality chose to postpone the project until funding was secured instead of starting it with the risk of being discontinued because of insufficient funds. Finally, Prime Minister Salam Fayyad provided the required funds during a visit he made to Hebron and today work has started on the ground. Once the project is finalized, it shall provide Hebron Municipality with a serious and effective solution to traffic jams especially those created by taxis randomly parked on streets around Bab Al Zawiya. A distinctive building shall host the central station: this will help organize traffic in the city and enable Palestinians to move freely within the centre.

Built on a total area of 4000m2, the station is centrally located between Al Adl and Bir Al Sabe‘ streets. The building‘s total area is 22600 m2 and it shall comprise seven floors, with 3000m2 each. It shall be equipped with basic services, elevators, restrooms, administrative offices as well as waiting areas for passengers and drivers alike.

On another level, participants in the tour also visited Al Hussein Stadium to be officially inaugurated at the end of next month with a match between a Palestinian and an Italian team. The stadium is equipped with bleachers, a grass football field, light, sound and on-the-air transmission systems in addition to an electronic control room with state-of-the-art equipment.

As for the indoor sports hall which is one of the biggest in Palestine, Mayor Osaily said that final works are underway and shall continue at a fast pace in order to finish the project as soon as possible. Works are underway to install the roof of the hall after a contract has been signed to this end with a Turkish company.

In reply to a question by journalists concerning public parks, Osaily accompanied participants to Al Salam Park currently under construction on a total area of more than 14 dunums. The Park shall comprise recreational facilities as well as architectural and natural landscapes designed to beautify the city and to provide a green recreational area for citizens.

Mr. Saleh Jadallah Osaily, Head of the Youth and Sports Directorate in Hebron accompanied participants on their visit to Al Hussein Stadium. He expressed his joy and pride at the revival of sports in Hebron as well as his satisfaction at the modern facilities being constructed, adding that Hebron Municipality and its Mayor understand and value the importance of sports and the role it plays in development. He commended mayor Osaily for his strong support to the Sports sector in Hebron.

At the end of the tour and the press conference, participants highlighted the importance of building ties and increasing communication and cooperation between local media and local institutions. The media should help reflect achievements and disseminate success stories to set an example for others to follow in order to provide high level services suitable for Palestinians.
